QBS – Making a Difference

Students were invited to wear green, blue and white to school to raise awareness that it is Earth Day around the world today. At QBS we nurture the belief in our students that through our actions we can ‘Make a Difference’. It is hoped that long-term students will go through life with a belief that their actions (big and small) make a difference in many ways. This ethos is well-supported through the International Baccalaureate’s PYP curriculum framework in place at QBS.

We also know that many families take action with charities and community groups which nurtures the QBS belief that people can ‘Make a Difference’.

Mosquito Prevention

The warmer months have arrived and proactive steps are taken at QBS to minimise mosquitoes. These steps include: contractors clearing leaf litter and vegetation along the rear and side fences outside QBS playgrounds; mosquito machines operate continuously in the playground; and repellent machines operate in areas of the school. During warmer months the Amah team also take measures to attend to drains or areas where water collects to reduce mosquito breeding environments. Please be reminded that mosquito bands and repellent may be worn to school during the warmer months.

QBS would welcome the donation of an additional mosquito machine from a community member to increase the number of machines operating in the playground. Please contact me if you could consider such a gesture.

Home Learning

Recently the school’s extended leadership team members reviewed home learning (homework) so that its purpose, guidelines and expectations are clearer for stakeholders at QBS. Further Home Learning communication will follow later this term in the eNews .

PTA Bus Users – please read

Please always inform both class teachers and the PTA staff of any changes to your child’s to normal pick up or drop off routines. If your child is not using the bus on any particular day of the week which is a change from normal use, it is very important that class teacher and the PTA staff know about this. Communication by parents to both class teacher and PTA staff is expected.

Currently the PTA staff along with Ms Yee and Mr Dewey are reviewing bus procedures to ensure the existing arrival and departure protocols are the best they can be and in the best interests of student safety.

Silver Jubilee District Zombie Apocalypse Camp

27 of the QBS Cub Scouts spent an adventurous few days at the Zombie Apocalypse Camp last weekend. 10 adults camped with the cubs, while a number of parents came for the Saturday to lend a hand.

The Cubs took place in an Amazing Race, working in teams with the Scouts to map read their way around the area and participating in various activities as they went. There was the traditional campfire and songs before bed, sleeping in tents that they had put up themselves. On the Sunday most cubs visited an organic farm, while older cubs, interested in continuing to Big Scouts next year, had a taster of Scout activities, such as archery, bubble football and building large structures with bamboo and rope.

The Cubs enjoyed themselves very much and were great representatives of QBS. A big thank you goes to all who helped make it a success.

Sharing for a cause

This year we are very excited to be able to support Kids4Kids campaign, ‘Sharing for a cause’. This campaign’s goal is to alleviate ‘invisible poverty’ in Hong Kong by providing some of our poorest families with stationary and computer items. We are a donation centre so you can drop off your items in our gym. These donations will then be collected and distributed to families in need.

Below are two photos that show the type of items that will be collected.

Here is a link to a video to show how to pack computer items.
The types of items we are not collecting are:

  • Old, unusable
  • Non-hygenic
  • Broken
  • Missing parts

The campaign starts on May 1st and runs for the whole month. If you would like to know more about the campaign then click here. It is a fantastic way to spring clean for a good cause!

Beach Cleaner Sunday 24th April with plastic Free Seas, North Beach Discovery Bay

If you are interested in participating in the beach clean below is the relevant information. Please be aware that this event is organised by Plastic Free Seas.

The weather forecast isn’t looking great, but we do not cancel unless there is very strong rain, or thunder and lightning when we are to go on the beach. This makes it more difficult for the people coming from outside of DB, but is a benefit to the people who are participating and live in DB.

Here are some guidelines:

  1. Wear closed-toe shoes
  2. Wear clothing appropriate for the weather (hot or cold)
  3. Bring a full reusable water bottle
  4. Suntan lotion, hat and bug spray are advisable

I hope to see some Quarry Bay students on the beach on Sunday.

Volunteers can take Bus 9, C9 or C4 which will let you off at the North Plaza. The beach is a very short walk from the plaza. You can walk through the plaza to the waterfront, turn left and follow along until you reach a path which will lead you to the beach. You’ll see the beach as you walk along the waterfront. Or, you can follow the road to the left of the plaza (with the tunnel behind you) and you will reach the path at the end of the road.

See below for a map of Discovery Bay and our flyer
