Principal’s Comments

Quarry Bay School has been buzzing with activity this week despite the weather, which has meant the children have not had many playtimes outside. There has been lots of exciting learning in the classes especially working on practical investigations and inquiries into scientific concepts.

Maternity Leave for Mrs Jacobs 4J

Mrs Mohua Jacob will start her maternity leave on Monday and we all wish her well during the next few weeks before her baby is due. Mr James Whyman will be taking 4J during Mrs Jacob maternity leave. Mr Whyman has been working along in 4J this week to familiarise himself with the children and routines of the class.

Mrs Emma Bernardo has a new baby boy, Samuel, to add to her family and we send her many congratulations.

4V and 4Y Assembly

The Year 4 children from classes 4V and 4Y did an amazing job today with their assembly about the food chain and endangered animals and it was great to see so many parents at the performance. The children seemed to enjoy the variety of information, dancing and singing as well as instrumentalist that played the children into assembly. Thank you to the teachers and EA’s that made the assembly successful.

New Parents Induction

We are looking for some parent volunteers who would like to be involved in the Induction process for new families into the QBS community. At QBS we run a through induction programme for our new year 1 parents however families who join our school later or midway through the year can often need a friendly face when they first join our school. If you are interested in becoming a part of the initiative please contact Mrs Sue Yee at sue.yee@qbs.edu.hk.

QBS Year Book cover competition

All children will be invited to enter the Year Book Cover competition for the QBS Year book 2016 through Qoodle next week. The designs need to be bright and colourful on A4 paper. Name and class need to on the back of the entry and can be handed in to Mrs Yee. Although some families might like to have a head start over a rainy weekend!

Regards,

Let us recycle your plastic bottles!

As part of our Sharing the Planet unit this Term Year 3 will be making sculptures from recycled materials. We are hoping to collect any 500 ml plastic bottles that you might have. We need around 360 bottles and haven’t quite reached that number yet! We can provide a home for any plastic bottles that you might have at home or that you buy, and then no longer want. Please do not buy bottles just for us, we only want to recycle not produce more waste.

Please send tthe bottles to school with your child. Label the bottles “Year 3 SCULPTURE” and your child’s class teacher will ensure they reach the right destination.

Thanking you in advance for supporting our children’s learning.

Community Beach Clean Up in Discovery Bay with Plastic Free Seas

The Year 3s have just started their new unit about taking responsibility for our environment. We had an informative and inspiring presentation from Dana from plastic Free Seas who made us think very careful about our choices. Apologies to our Year 3 Parents if the children are turning into Eco Warriors! If you are interested, Plastic Free Seas we be organising a beach clean up next Sunday, 24th April, at Discovery Bay from 2 pm to 4 pm. Here is the link with more details.

Year 1 and 2 Yoga

This is a reminder for Year 1 and 2 parents about the Year 1 and 2 Yoga Program.

We have recently introduced a Yoga Program which is developed from an online resource, Comic Kids. The main aim of the program is to support the development of the children’s fundamental movement skills. You may click here to visit the webpage and find out more by watching their introductory video.

The children have been really engaged in their weekly cosmic kids yoga episode and the benefits they receive are wide ranging from physical to social and emotional. I also discussed this program with parents at the recent consultations.

To view a list of how regular Yoga practice and Cosmic Kids can benefit your child, click here.

Many of the children have expressed an interest in doing the program at home and so I told them I would send out the link to parents.

Best Regards,

Mr Luke SCHRODER
P.E.Teacher
