QBS Celebration of Learning Day

On Friday we held our student led learning journeys at QBS. The students enjoyed being in charge of sharing their learning with parents. It was great to be able to observe parents enjoying time at school  and being able to see first hand the learning progress of their child. Thank you to parents for supporting this important student led conference.

QBS End of Year Reports

I am in the process of reading and signing all student reports from Year 1 to Year 6. Reading and signing all reports gives me an overview of all students, their areas of success and important next steps in learning. The reports will be posted to families before the 24th of June. All reports will be live on Gateway for parents to access on the 17th of June at 12.00pm.

I am particularly interested to read about the resilience of students when learning tasks are challenging. This is an important long-term learning habit (and life skill) which needs to be nurtured both at home and at school. As mentioned in last week’s ENews, QBS staff will be focusing on PSPE (Personal, Social and Physical Education) aspects in the curriculum next year. One area of consideration within PSPE will be the raising the awareness of the child to be ready for learning, focussed and concentrating. These aspects develop the child’s ability to respond to tasks with resilience, determination and confidence.

Meet the Teacher

Next Wednesday the 15th of June all students will meet their new classroom teacher for the coming academic year. An email will be sent to parents at 12 noon on Wednesday with new class details.

End of Year Report

Dear Parents,

Your child’s End of Year Report will be available online from 12.00pm (Friday the 17th of June) on the Gateway. A signed hard copy will be posted to you on Monday 20th of June.

For instructions for accessing the End of Year Report, please click here.

You should already have your Gateway login details. Your password will be the one that you have chosen previously when you have logged in to make appointments for parent consultations. If you need assistance with these details or in accessing the information on Gateway please contact Mr Ken Lee ken.lee@qbs.edu.hk

New Qoodle

A new version of Qoodle will come online on 20th June. We hope that the new Qoodle will provide a safe online environment to support our students learning both at school and at home.

On the 20th June, Qoodle will be temporarily unavailable whilst we switch over. Students can still access their Google Apps for Education accounts directly from here.

Setting up the new Qoodle platform has been a very time-consuming process at QBS as it is not possible to simply upgrade our existing Qoodle. We have had to recreate all the courses on the new platform and will gradually move the content across. The new Qoodle will have basic content for Maths, English, Chinese, Learning Centre, Expressive Arts, Learning Technologies and the first Unit of Inquiry for the coming school year. Content for other Units of Inquiry and areas of the curriculum will be added throughout the new school year.

On the new Qoodle, all home learning in all areas of the curriculum will be accessed via the Year Group course. We hope this will be provide a more consistent experience for students and will reflect the school’s updated Home Learning Policy.

A few pieces of information on the old Qoodle which were aimed at parents and staff will be moved to the Gateway. Parents will receive further information about this early in the new school year.

Home Readers

We are currently reviewing our Home Readers and would be very grateful if everyone in the community could double check shelves and book baskets at home for any Quarry Bay School Home Readers. They usually have a ‘QBS Home Readers’ sticker on them, plus some kind of colour band sticker on the spine near the top.

Please return these with your children as soon as possible so that we may take stock of what we have. These books are expensive and sourcing can be difficult so your help in returning any spares is much appreciated.

Gecko Maths Competition

Gecko Maths is a team competition, where teams of 5 tackle some difficult mathematical problems

Eight QBS teams participated in the triangular Gecko Maths Competition between; Q.B.S., South Island School Yr 7, and Bradbury School, held at SIS on Wednesday 8th.June.

There were 2 competitions:

  1. Overall (SIS v QBS v Bradbury)
  2. Primary School (QBS V Bradbury)

In the Overall Competition, two very strong SIS teams placed 1st and 2nd with 28 and 27 points respectively. Two QBS teams placed joint 3rd with 26 points. An excellent effort, especially when considering that the SIS students are, of course, one year older.

In the Primary School Competition, QBS teams finished 1st., 2nd., 3rd., to claim a clean sweep.

Congratulations to all 8 teams (40 students) who won through to SIS competition, and in particular to our two (joint) winning teams.

PTA SUBSCRIPTION FEES 2016/2017

Since the inception of the ESF Ordinance (2008) – all parents have been required to join and become members of their child’s School PTA.

To facilitate ease of payment of the PTA subscription fees, parents can now pay this fees together with the bus fees as stated on the bus application form. This fee is a one fee per family annual payment.

In the event that you do not subscribe to the school bus service you will be required to send a cheque to ESF centre directly, upon receiving their invoice in June.

We will liaise closely with ESF to avoid duplicate receipt of payment. All duplicate payments will be refunded back to the parents.
