Principal’s Comments

Welcome to the new academic year at QBS. I’d like to extend a special welcome to all of our new families joining the school community. It is lovely to have the children back at school after their long summer holiday. They seem taller and certainly have had many stories to share this week. They have had a very settled first week and teachers have focussed on re-establishing learning routines within their new classrooms.

At QBS, we know you are interested in your child’s education and we will always do our best to keep you informed about school activities, the progress your child is making, and also let you know when we need your help. Parents are not only welcome but encouraged to actively participate in life at QBS. Always ask your child’s teacher if you are interested in making closer contact with the school.

Sometimes parents help in the classroom, accompany the class on excursions and are always welcome to discuss their child with the teachers. Please remember, it is a good idea to make an appointment first so you know the teacher will be available at a mutually convenient time.

Finally, QBS is a community school. It is our school and together we are responsible for ensuring it is a wonderful learning environment for the children. You and your child get out of it what you are willing to put into it. I encourage a close, friendly relationship between home and school.

My door is always open to you should you require assistance or need to raise a matter with me. It is a privilege to be the Principal of QBS and I am looking forward to another busy and productive year with your child.

Regards,

MinaD2

Learning Centre

The Learning Centre will be functioning fully next week and the children will be able to come in, during the Year 4, 5 and 6 lunchtime, to borrow and return books and read or play boardgames.
Each class will return their Summer Borrowing during their Learning Centre sessions and they will be able to borrow books as normal.  I look forward to the lunchtime buzz and meeting more of the children.  I will also be looking for some ‘Shelf Elves’ to come and support us by tidying the shelves and putting books away.  Please come and see Miss Trunkfield or Mrs Tang if you are keen to help out.
Happy Reading!
Miss Trunkfield

Parents as Partners

After a lovely long break, we are keen to invite our parents into school to be involved with QBS school life. Please look out for regular messages from me in the newsletter this year as I will be organising several ways to involve you. There are many ways to come and participate in our school: from working in the classrooms, participating in workshops, attending our coffee mornings, helping to run a gardening programme, reading stories to our students, helping on trips and even coming in and cooking alongside our students, as well as many other initiatives. We look forward to working closely with you.

QBS Online Systems – Gateway, Qoodle, Big Universe, Gmail and more …

At QBS we have a number of online systems to support administration, communication and teaching and learning. A brief outline of these systems is provided here. Please take time over the next week to ensure you and your child(ren) can access these systems and inform us of any problems you encounter so we can help.

Email Issue for Hotmail Users

We have feedback from a few parents that they have not received emails from school. This has been almost entirely from Hotmail users. QBS newsletters and other emails to parents are sent using an ESF-wide mailing system designed to distribute large numbers of emails and prevent them being classed as spam. Unfortunately, the system is having issues with Hotmail and the ESF IT Dept are currently contacting Microsoft to try to resolve them. In the meantime, please could parents try the work around described below and contact Ken Lee at school if the problems persist. Parents should receive QBS Newsletter #1 at sometime today (Friday 21st August). If you prefer to use a different email account to receive school communications please update your information on the Gateway.
  1. Login to your Hotmail account.
  2. Go to Settings
  3. There’s an option called “Safe and Blocked Senders” – click on this
  4. Then click on “Safe Senders”
  5. In the “Sender or domain to mark as safe” box enter both the School and ESF Centre domain address

(For example,  for Quarry Bay School, the domain is qbs.edu.hk and ESF centre is esfcentre.edu.hk )

Mini Netball and Mini Rugby

I have been recently contacted by The South China Athletics Association regarding mini rugby and mini netball programs which they have on offer. I have had some really positive feedback regarding their programs and due to the convenient location it makes for an excellent Saturday morning option of sport for our children.

These programs begin early September so it is important to get your registrations in early.

PTA news

Message from the PTA Chairman

To all members of the QBS community,

The PTA would like to extend a very warm welcome to all new parents and guardians joining QBS this year.  We look forward to meeting you around the school and in our PTA shop if we haven’t already done so.  To our returning QBS parents and guardians, we hope you had an enjoyable summer break and will join us again in what promises to be another successful year of exciting social events!

With the start of a new academic year, the PTA unfortunately lose key and valued members of our group.  We are consequently looking for new Board Members; one of which is for the position of Honorary Treasurer, to join our current group of dedicated parents and teachers.  As a Director, you will hold a very responsible position whilst being an active member of the Executive Committee.

If you believe you have what it takes to join this innovative group of parents and teachers, please forward your details to ‘pta@qbs.edu.hk‘, with a description of your attributes and how you feel you can contribute to the PTA for our consideration and selection process.

We always encourage and are looking for your valuable feedback, as well as ideas for new events, so please do not hesitate to contact us directly via email on ptasuggestions@qbs.edu.hk or call us on 2887 1004 and speak to Mona Diwan, our PTA Co-ordinator.

Thank you and we look forward to receiving your information soon!

Kind regards,

Michelle Saad

Chairman

Upcoming PTA Events:

4th Chess Star Competition

Please click here for the poster. Online registration details and procedures will be posted on Qoodle as well as circulated in next week’s newsletter.

We welcome parent volunteers who would like to help with the event to contact us as soon as possible at mona.diwan@qbs.edu.hk.

PTA School Buses

The PTA offers a standard bus service with designated stops. With nearly 83% of our students travelling on the school bus daily, it is difficult for us to offer a door to door service. We therefore request parents and families to select a designated stop closest to your residence to avoid later changes in bus routes and or stops, especially since most of our bus routes are completely full. If you would like assistance to decide your bus routes, please contact Dorothy Ho on pta@qbs.edu.hk.

School Bus Schedule in the upcoming weeks is as below:

  • 3rd September:  School closed – public holiday (no school bus)
  • 11th September:  CPD Day – No school for students (no school bus)
  • 17th September:  Parent-Teacher Consultation – school closes at 12:00 noon

Click here for Bus Schedule for early school closure.

PTA Shop

The PTA Shop is out of stock of the below items:

  • Eco-Friendly School Bags
  • Eco-Friendly Book Bags – Navy
  • Eco-Friendly Book Bags – Red
  • Parakito – Refills

We expect the stock of the above to arrive in September. You will be notified in the coming newsletters. Pre-orders are most welcome for the bags.

Feedback or Suggestions

If you have any feedback or suggestions you would like to give on our event or services provided, please email directly to:  ptasuggestions@qbs.edu.hk. Your email will directly be received by our Chairman who will reply you at the earliest available moment.
