Key dates for next week

  • Monday 15th May to Friday 19th May – ESF Year 6 Beijing trip

Dear Parents

As acting Principal, whilst Ms Dunstan has been away, I have been all over the school enjoying being involved with the children and their learning. The singing assembly was wonderful this morning and the children clearly enjoy singing together.

We were lucky to have a special visitor, Celia Roberts, who is visiting school from Thomas House, the first SEN school in Thailand. The QBS student voice has promoted a dress casual day which was to support the SEN developments in Thailand. We were able to present a cheque to Celia for $10,000 to go towards providing support and resources for the classrooms and teachers. Thank you to all Mr Leonie and the student voice for organising this and ensuring that it was so well supported.

The PTA disco for the children from Year 1 to Year 4 was very successful especially as the Year 1 children had been taught some dance moves by the teachers. Please ask your children to show you! Thank you too, to those parents who supported this event.

The weather is very inclement at the moment so we would like to remind all students to have a raincoat in their bags, especially as we go into the rainy season. If any children have old wellington boots that they have grown out of, we are looking to keep a supply in school, so please donate them to the Year 1’s.

The mosquitos are being quite fierce in the playgrounds although we have several mosquito machine around school which are regularly serviced. We recommend that all children come to school covered with mosquito protection.

Some of the year 6 children are participating in the ESF Beijing trip next week and the children and staff who are going are very excited. Parents of those children on the Beijing trip please ensure that you read the notices from Mr Purton with regards to the communication from China.

We are looking forward to seeing Ms Dunstan back at school on Monday and she would like to express her thanks to the community for all the kind wishes that she has received.

26TH SJD Cub Scouts at District Camp

25 brave Cub Scouts, accompanied by hardy leaders and parents, weathered the downpours to attend the Silver Jubilee District Scout Camp at the start of the Easter holidays. Despite the weather, they managed to put up 16 tents without (much) complaining!

Fortunately the weather improved over the weekend so they could enjoy activities such as fire lighting, team games, shelter building and problem solving.

The highlight of the camp was the traditional water fight where Cubs & leaders got thoroughly drenched! Click here to access the video.

A good time was had by all.

Advanced Notice – PTA Event – Children and Screen Time

Between iPads, mobile phones, laptops, video games and social media, many families are struggling with issues relating to technology. Just how much screen time is acceptable for our children? What is the impact on young minds? How do we protect them as they explore their lives online?

QBS PTA will be showing “Screenagers” on Tuesday 6th June 2017 in the school hall from 6.30pm.

“Screenagers” is an award-winning documentary which seeks to open up a conversation between parents, children and educators as we face the challenges that technology has brought into all our lives. Delaney Ruston is a Stanford trained physician and social change documentary filmmaker who got the idea to make Screenagers while struggling with her own kids over screen time. Combining real life stories, expert academic opinion and sometimes surprising insights from current research, Screenagers offers options for families as we seek to empower our kids to safely navigate the digital world.

More information about the event will be sent next week.

Term 3 After School Activities & Change of Bus Travel Arrangement

Unfortunately we still have many parents who do not inform the PTA if their child/ren have after school activities or a change in afternoon travel arrangements on the buses. The above results in a delay in departure of the buses from school, while the PTA staff, principals, teachers and staff of the school are looking for the missing students.

We therefore request your cooperation to notify us before 12:30pm on a normal school day, and 10:00am on an early school closure day, for change in travel arrangement of your child. This procedure is imperative and in the best interest and safety of your child.

(Parents are requested to inform PTA via email at pta@qbs.edu.hk as well as copying the message to the class teacher/school before 12:30pm.)

If you have any feedback, or suggestions you would like to make for our events or services provided, please email them directly to: ptasuggestions@qbs.edu.hk. Your email will be received directly by our Chairman, who will reply to you at the earliest available moment.

We request all parents to support a greener environment by BYOB “bring your own bag” when you come to purchase items from the shop.

[With immediate effect the PTA Shop will no longer provide any shopping bags].
