Key dates for Term 2

Key dates for next week:

  • Friday the 2nd of February at 9 am – Year 4 performance – “Giraffes Can’t Dance”

We have had another busy week of learning. The Year 1s enjoyed a trip to the theatre this week as part of their current learning. The green spitting monster seemed to be a very popular character in the show. The Year 5 students did a tremendous job on Wednesday at their market day. Their entrepreneurial skills certainly shone over the last few weeks and were showcased at the market. The Year 3 and 4 students enjoyed the opportunity to visit the market and purchase a wide range of products from peers. The Year 4 students have been working hard on their upcoming performance. We look forward to welcoming the Year 4 parents next week.

Please click here to read a message about staying healthy during flu season. We appreciate the continued cooperation and vigilance from parents.

Staff are involved in professional development on Friday and into the weekend. Teaching staff are doing an in-school International Baccalaureate workshop with visiting presenters about approaches to learning. Education Assistants are doing a workshop designed to enhance understanding of a using questions in an inquiry classroom.

QBS has over 100 students running in the ESF Cross Country Race on Saturday at KGV. Good luck to all runners. Unfortunately I cannot attend the race this year as I am involved in professional development. Mr Schroder and Mr Leone will support the students at this event. I look forward to hearing about the race when students are back next week.

Regards,

Start of School Day – attendance register and late arrival

In Term 2 the school’s front gate will be closed at 8.15am daily when the bell rings. Any students arriving after the school gate has been closed at 8.15am will be required to register their attendance at Reception on the ground floor. These students will be marked in the Gateway attendance register as late. All teachers take the attendance register at 8.15am daily and students are required to be in the classroom for this so arrival before the school bell is expected.

Cooperation is sought by all parents to have their child at school before the 8.15am bell rings to ensure a smooth start to their learning each day.

Language Arts Fortnight Celebrations

Monday 5th February – Thursday 15th February

This year at QBS Book Week is teaming up with the Chinese Department, Visual and Expressive Arts Department to celebrate a language arts fortnight. The theme for the last two weeks leading up to Chinese New Year will be ‘Hong Kong: Our City”. This will be a chance for us to celebrate Hong Kong culture, literature and the arts in the lead up to one of Hong Kong’s most auspicious festivals.

On Monday 5th February the children will come to school dressed in something which celebrates the city of Hong Kong. Please consider what you love about our city and be as creative as you like with the costumes. The children will be asked to bring a $10 donation that will go towards providing literacy resources for the Indochina Starfish Foundation, a charity based in Cambodia that educates disadvantaged students from the city of Phnom Penh.

On Thursday 8th February, the Year 1, 2 and 3 students will have an author visit from Stuart Reid, a poet, from the UK. He will be selling books for his visit and there will be more details for parents, about those book sales, in the coming weeks.

On Friday 9th February, the whole QBS community would come together to have a Chinese New Year Activity Day. (Normal class lessons would be suspended) Students will experience six kinds of Chinese related activities in the areas of sports, art and craft, mindfulness, expressive arts, games and puzzles throughout the day. It will be great to see the community embracing the rich culture of Hong Kong during the Chinese New Year season.

On Wednesday 14th February, we will have a display of the children’s understanding of the Chinese Culture at our CNY Assembly. Students should come in school in gold, red, yellow or traditional Chinese clothes to celebrate the festival.

We would love any parents who would like to share any stories or books in Mandarin, Cantonese or English over these two weeks to get in touch with Anna Trunkfield anna.trunkfield@qbs.edu.hk or Katherine Ong Katherine.Ong@qbs.edu.hk . We can arrange a time for you to come in at lunchtime or to read to your child’s class.

We are looking forward to everyone contributing to this exciting week.
