QBS Exhibition

The Year 6 students are busy preparing for their Exhibition unit which will take place on Thursday the 17th of May. The focus of their learning is centred around human rights with particular emphasis on refugees. The Exhibition is an important learning process for the students. Please read here about the student initiated action happening at school in the new few weeks. There will be many ways for your child to be involved in the action to support the Year 6 students.

Council of International Schools Feedback to QBS

In late March the school hosted visitors from the Council of International Schools (CIS) for a preliminary evaluation visit. The school has received a detailed report from CIS following this visit. The report is designed to assist staff to plan for continued development of the school and also affirm the already good practice in place. I am pleased to inform parents that the school received a total of 41 commendations in areas including:

  • purpose and direction;
  • governance and leadership;
  • curriculum;
  • teaching and assessment;
  • student learning and well-being;
  • premises, health and safety; and
  • community and home partnerships.

This is very positive feedback for QBS and something to be proud of as a community. Please click here to read the commendations.

Thank you to the 1H and 1R students for their creative assembly today about Eric Carle’s famous book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. It was enjoyed by everyone.

QBS Bus Service 2018/2019

All bus applications and information packs were sent out via email this week to the parents of bus students.

We are in the process of transitioning the school bus operations from QBS PTA to QBS/ESF. The PTA will cease to manage the operations of the bus service at the end of current school year. From August 2018 onwards, ESF will support QBS to manage the daily bus operations.

Bus fees will not be changing in the 2018/2019 school year. The bus fees for the 2018/2019 school year must be paid to QBS – please make cheques payable to: Quarry Bay School

Any queries about the QBS Bus Service for 2018/2019 can be directed to Purnima Sharma (QBS Bus Coordinator). Please call Purnima (852) 28871004 or schoolbus@qbs.edu.hk

Please do not send in annual PTA subscription fees with the bus fees. In previous years the bus and PTA subscription fees have been collected together and this practice will cease for the 2018/2019 school year.

We will continue working carefully to transition the bus operations from the PTA to QBS/ESF.

ESF Withdrawal Policy

Parents who wish to withdraw your child/children from Quarry Bay School are required to submit the “Student Withdrawal Notice” to officially inform the school of the withdrawal of your child. Notification of withdrawal by any other means such as email, letter or verbal notice are not accepted.

Please download and complete the Student Withdrawal Notice should you plan to withdraw your child. This should be returned to the Admissions Office in school at least ONE MONTH prior to the last date of attendance. Additional fees may apply if there is less than one month notice. You may complete and return the form by email to admissions@qbs.edu.hk or by hand to the QBS Admissions Office.

For current students withdrawing from QBS at the end of the school year, withdrawal notice must be received by 31st May.

Should there be changes in the last date of attendance for your child after the submission of the Withdrawal Notice, parents are required to submit a revised withdrawal notice to school, stipulating that the revised notice supersedes the previous one with regard to the changes in dates. In some circumstances, subsequent changes on the last date of attendance may be declined by the school, as it depends on the availability of school place. The deposit can also be forfeited if the change is served with short notice even though the first withdrawal notice was served insufficient notice.

To cancel a Withdrawal notice, parents are required to inform the school in writing before the last date of attendance. Cancellation may be declined depending on availability at the school.

Battle of the Books Semi Final

On Thursday the Battle of the Books (BoB) team went head to head with 5 other schools at Clearwater Bay School.

Since Term 1, 60 children have been attending the BoB club with Ms Van Gaalen and Ms Trunkfield. They have read many of the 20 fiction books that are the subject of the competition. We were so impressed that this many children were keen to join the club and read some new books.

The final team was chosen 2 weeks ago and consisted of 12 children who took turns to battle in teams of 6 against other schools. The aim of the competition is to answer recall questions about the books that are so detailed they blow the teachers away with their depth of knowledge. The rules are strict and it’s very intense. This year the team finished 3rd out of 6 schools and were so close to the runners up, Clearwater Bay School . They were a credit to QBS and themselves and it was a pleasure to watch them battle.

Expressive Arts News

Congratulations to the Year 5 and 6 dancers who represented QBS at the ESF Celebration of Dance last Friday. The children’s dance piece was called ‘United Diversity’. Showing a range of dance styles the children showed how diverse dance can be. They also showed that dancing can bring people together and although performing as separate groups initially, in their finale they came together and danced as one.

The dance show was of a very high standard across ESF and the children felt very proud of their achievement.
