Happy Diwali
Happy Diwali to all! QBS students and staff looked very colourful on Friday to celebrate this special time of year. On assembly we all enjoyed the students’ drama performance about Diwali.
Goodbye to Mr Bennie
Sadly we have said farewell to Mr Niall Bennie this week after five years of wonderful service at QBS. Mr Bennie has been teaching PE and working with the learning support team in recent years and has contributed so much to our students. Mr Bennie will take up his new role as the Director of Sports at the Australian International School (Hong Kong) from next week and we wish him success in this next career step. We will miss Mr Bennie and thank him for all of his work at QBS. One thing his colleagues will miss will be his delicious morning tea treats he so often promised to share and then would forget to bring them to school. Best wishes Mr Bennie from all of us at QBS.
Please click here to see Mr Bennie’s farewell assembly surprise. (To view this movie you will need to follow these steps: log into your child’s Qoodle account, then select QBS General and be sure to use the password listed immediately above QBS General)
Mr Matt Glencross and Mr James Atkinson will begin teaching at QBS next week following Mr Bennie’s departure. Mr Glencross will be teaching with the learning support team in The Hive and Mr Atkinson will be teaching in the PE team. Both of these new teachers will work part-time each week. Please click here to read their introductions which were shared in a previous newsletter.
Class Assemblies
Our students have started sharing some of their learning through class assemblies. Last week we enjoyed the highlights of Year 5 camp from the 5L and 5A students. This week 6K and 6J shared some very important messages about reading with parents. We look forward to seeing you at your child’s class assembly as the year progresses and hope you enjoy the fun when you visit.
Student Safety
I am concerned that some children are being left alone in the playground waiting for extra-curricular clubs after school. This is not appropriate and we will be making contact with families if children are without an adult after school. Thank you for your cooperation in this safety matter.
Congratulations to Mrs Jacob (4J teacher) who is expecting her first baby. We are delighted to hear there will be another QBS baby born this academic year.
Regards,
QBS Girls Football
The QBS girls football team competed in an international schools tournament at Kowloon Bay this week.
We had two teams involved with both teams playing 4 matches each. There were wins, draws and losses for our teams but most importantly our players had lots of fun and can be very proud of their achievements this term.
Girls football is growing in popularity across the school with lots of girls from years 2-6 joining the lunch time football sessions at school which is part of the Active Playtime program.
There is also an after school club for girls football. If you are interested to find out more about how your daughter can get involved please email luke.schroder@qbs.edu.hk.
Fun Run Club
The Fun Run Club has taken off at Quarry Bay School. We knew it would be popular but the interest and efforts from the children has been amazing.
Please keep encouraging your children to take part in the initiative. A reminder that there is no need to sign up, the children just have to remember to wear their P.E. kit to school on the day and turn up at the beginning of snack time on the correct day.
- Tuesday – Year 3
- Wednesday – Year 4
- Thursday – Year 5
- Friday – Year 6
Braemar Hill Netball Friendly Match
On Wednesday our QBS Netball Academy Girls took part in friendly matches against Chinese International School.
We had 4 teams competing and the girls had a lot of fun, in which for many of them was their first opportunity to play against another school.
We have a couple of tournaments coming up so this offered our teams some much needed match practice.
2nd Hand Winter Uniforms
The weather is starting to change and becoming a bit chilly…
We have a large quantity of 2nd hand winter uniforms for sale. Please come have a look. Nurse Delia has more uniforms in her office as well. Remember that all proceeds will go to one of our school charities.
New Chinese Online Learning Resource
One of our most popular Online Learning Resources, BrainPop is now available in Chinese. We hope that this resource will help students make connections between their Mandarin studies and their Units of Inquiry as well as developing their listening and comprehension skills. The direct link is available from the Online Learning Resources course on Qoodle.
QBS Hour of Code
“Everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer
because it teaches you how to think.”
— STEVE JOBS, THE LOST INTERVIEW
It is now widely recognised that learning to code helps students develop important problem solving and thinking skills which can be applied to other aspects of their lives. In the past, coding or programming involved entering vast amounts of code and was quite laborious for students. Nowadays, several free apps and flash based web sites have been developed which make coding visual and fun allowing almost all students to participate creatively and become an inventor themselves.
We would like to invite all students to take part in a world wide “Hour of Code” during the period 7-11 December 2015. All year groups will be given an orientation to coding activities during their 45 minute ICT lesson during the and assigned a particular course. Links to the activities will be placed on the front page of Qoodle and a sticker with log in details stuck in student diaries. We would encourage students to continue these activities at home.
Further information about the world wide event “Hour of Code” can be found at https://hourofcode.com/us
School Photograph
The school photographer will be at school again next Thursday (19th November). We will have the whole school photo, staff group photo and some of the team photos.
- If your child did not take the individual photo in last photo-taking session in September, please inform your class teacher who will arrange your child to have the photo that day.
- Please be reminded that all students are to dress in navy blue school uniform on the photo day. Any students who regularly have their PE lesson will do the lesson in school uniform.
The rota for the photographs can be found here.
